And the setting is very different to the European one. Historians still do not agree on how much of European integration would have taken place outside the Cold War context. There, too, parochialism is alive and well. The main problem with transposition has to do with what Europeans for so long have called mastery.

That is, it is a history that is one part international, one part transnational, and one part universal in its implications for other places at other times. Nevertheless, the nation persists at the root of these concepts. J. H. Elliott has written similarly, with regard to Atlantic history, that “[t]he historian who hopes to span these several Atlantics, however, requires impressive linguistic skills and a wide range of reading. ” The same may hold true for other regions, including the Asia Pacific.

Another edition of this book appearing after two decades will probably reach a similar conclusion. That is the hope, at least. For a truly global era and a global community have yet to emerge; but the Asia-Pacific region is a better place than it has been for some time.
