Rickey opened the first fulltime spring training facility. He also pioneered the use of batting cages and pitching machines. Many believe he was the first general manager to insist players wear batting helmets. But Rickey’s biggest contribution to the game came when he was general manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers. In 1947, he brought Jackie Robinson to the team. Robinson was the first African American player in the major leagues in more than 60 years. This opened the door for the many great African American players that followed.

His first major innovation was the creation of the minor league farm system to develop young talent. Before Rickey, minor league teams all operated independently. In the 1920s, as general manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, he began buying minor league teams. He made them all part of the Cardinals organization. He saw the potential of the farm system.
